Dragonfly: Widow Skimmer (Libellula luctuosa)

May 4th-May 18th, 2012. This year hasn’t been the best year for dragonflies. We’ve seen a number of different species in Greene County near the Sandy Creek swamp where it moist. We haven’t seen many species in drier locations where other insects are scarce. We were, however, treated to a couple of displays by a female and immature Widow Skimmer beside a rural road in Hancock County on…

May 18th. We only saw the one female on each date. We haven’t seen any mature males yet this year. Widow Skimmers occur in Georgia between early May and early October so there’s still hope that we'll see more.
