Spring Walk At Fort Yargo State Park: Shelter A To The Old Fort, June 6th, 2015

June 3rd. I started to walk again at Fort Yargo State Park in Winder, Georgia. One of my favorite walks is from the Group Shelter A to the Old Fort and back. This is a rewarding walk for viewing wildflowers and I’ve been trying to walk it weekly and document the wildflowers I see.

The route, which I described here, here, and here.

The early spring wildflowers have finished blooming; it’s time to watch the developing fruit. A few late spring/summer wildflowers are blooming now.

A beautiful sunny morning to set out for a walk. It was starting to feel more like summer than spring.

Littleleaf Sensitive Briar (Mimosa microphylla) plants were blooming in the shade at ground level. It would be easy to miss them.

A couple of Starry Rosinweed (Silphium asterica) plants were blooming. They won’t do so well since they are in the shade.

Seed capsules were still developing on this Strawberry Bush (Euonymus americanus). This bush has a lot of fruit.

The Lanceleaf Loosestrife (Lysimachia lanceolata) plants were still blooming. The anthers were not mature when I found them on my previous walk; now they were and the anthers were powdery.

The Helmet Flowers (Scutellaria integrifolia) plants had finished blooming. All that is left now are the enlarged calyx halves that contain developing seeds.

I moved on towards the first bridge, and checked the…

Solomon’s Seal (Polygonatum biflorum) plants on the way. The berries were still developing.

Just beyond the bridge, a couple of Pipsissewa (Chimaphila maculata) plants were still blooming. The stalks of the flowers that had been fertilized had lost their petals and had straightened up as they began to develop seeds.

The Deerberry (Vaccinium staminium) bushes were still full of berries. I was still puzzled by the fact that nothing seemed to be interested in eating them. I read that these berries are very tart when ripe; either these weren’t ripe or they must not be appetizing.

The Eastern Sweetshrub (Calycanthus floridus) fruit was still developing and looked healthy as were the…

developing capsules on the witch hazel are a highlight of this walk.

A few seed capsules were developing on one of the Mountain Azalea (Rhododendron canescens). It doesn’t look as if there will be as many as there were last year.

A Swamp Rose was blooming along the lake shore just south of the Fishing Area.

Flower buds were still developing on a Button Bush (Cephalanthus occidentalis) just north of the bridge to the Fishing Area.

The developing seed capsule on the Perfoliate Bellwort (Uvularia perfoliata) still looked healthy.

The spring wildflower season has definitely finished. I haven’t walked this trail consistently during the summer. It will be interesting to see what I’ve been missing.
