Eastern Gray Squirrel
(Sciurus carolinensis)
Walton County,
Georgia
One of this years’
crop of Eastern Gray Squirrels. Three young squirrels routinely come to the
bird feeders several times a day to scavenge sunflower seeds that have fallen
from the feeders. Winter must be in the air though. Today I saw six
squirrels scavenging.
When it gets colder
and the birds exhaust the seed in the field and come to the feeders, we can
have as many as three dozen American Goldfinches and Chipping Sparrows at the
feeders. Then we throw seed on the ground since the feeders can’t accommodate
all of the birds. The squirrels will also enjoy the additional food.
